Position Title Student Disability Services Coordinator
General Description

Provide disability-related support services and specialized advising to ensure equitable student participation in the College’s educational program. Assist current and prospective students and their families through the process of acquiring appropriate documentation and registering for services. Coordinate, in conjunction with the Assistant Deans for Academic Resources and Services and Administrative Coordinator, Dean of Students Office academic adjustments/accommodations and support services. Provide advocacy, consultation and negotiation with faculty, staff, and other members of the campus community with regard to students with disabilities. Assist in determining individualized accommodations based on individual student needs, College, and ARS policy and procedures, in compliance with applicable law.

Essential Functions

•Will meet with students seeking to register for Disability Support Services and provide intake interviews: review disability documentation, review student history of accommodations and current limitations of disability, determining with the student appropriate academic, housing, and meal accommodations in accordance with applicable law and Disability Services documentation requirements.
•Review psychological-educational assessments, psychological evaluations, medical and other technical documentation to verify disabilities, eligibility for Disability Support Services and assist in the determination of reasonable accommodations.
•Manage a caseload of students with disabilities as outlined by the Assistant Deans for Academic Resources and Services. Document and maintain case records. Responsible for maintain the confidentiality of student records as required by the College’s policy and regulations by law. Gather and report necessary data for assessment purposes.
•Communicate with health care providers regarding documentation, as necessary.
•Coordinate supportive services/auxiliary aids (i.e., interpreters, adaptive technology, exam proctoring, and/or note-taking services). Coordination is managed on a case-by-case basis.
•Develop partnerships with campus and communal supportive resources to promote academic success and retention.
•Assisting with coordinating temporary accommodations, including transportation services for mobility impairments.
•Hire, train, and supervise note-takers.
•Work collaboratively with support services on campus, such as Primary Contact Deans, Tiernan Field House, Residential Life, Student Health Services, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Disability Resource Center, Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students Office, Facilities, and other campus departments. Refer students with disabilities to support services. When necessary, provide training, guidance and support to faculty and/or staff working with students with disabilities.
•Provide ongoing consultation and technical assistance to faculty and staff to facilitate equal access, learning and other opportunities. Participate in the interactive process to resolve professor or student accommodation requests.
•Engage in phone and/or email correspondence with students and their families regarding Disability Support Services available at the College.
•Attends professional trainings, webinars, workshops, committees and community opportunities to stay current with trends related to post-secondary disabilities issues.
•Assist with website updates and other marketing tasks related to Disability Support Services.
•Collaborate with Other ARS Programs, including tutoring, academic coaching, as well as international and first-gen student support services
•Represents Disability Services as a member on various university committees.
•Participate in special projects or programming related to disability, access, and inclusion.
•Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Deans for Academic Resources and Services to support office and College functions.
•Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
•Knowledge of disability related laws including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Federal Fair Housing Act, and Office of Civil Rights (OCR) rulings.

•Demonstrated experience reviewing disability documentation, conducting interactive/iterative processes for determining academic, housing and dining accommodations and providing such accommodations.
•Experience using adaptive technology and software systems and/or interest in learning and training others on commonly used programs (e.g., Read and Write Gold, Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Livescribe pens, FM systems, remote captioning and other technology utilized by students with visual, hearing and print disabilities).

Qualifications & Standards

•Bachelor degree in a field relevant to disabilities and higher education, such as social work, counseling, psychology, educational psychology, education, rehabilitation counseling or related field.
•Knowledge of disability services and the reasonable accommodations process.
•At least one (1) year of experience working with students with disabilities in a postsecondary setting.

Classification and Status

This is a regular, full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

The regular hours for this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

Supervisory Responsibility

Will supervise student employees.

Physical Requirements

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans.

Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.
