Position Title Writer/Editor
General Description

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Writer/Editor for Marketing and Communications informs and persuades our audiences through storytelling across multiple media. The Writer/Editor will produce editorial for a wide range of print and digital projects, including direct mail, collateral for internal and external communications, websites, videos, email, magazines and miscellaneous marketing and communication pieces. This individual will collaborate with the creative team, reviewing creative briefs, and collaborating to bring concept to reality with innovative, fresh copy. The successful candidate will bring a strong appreciation for verbal and visual communication, and will know how to tell stories that will both inspire our constituency and sell Scripps to prospective students, donors, and partners by interpreting and conveying the Scripps brand promise to all audiences.

Essential Functions

This information is intended to be a descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. Under direction of the Creative Director, the Writer/Editor will be responsible for:
•Writing, editing, and proofreading content including, but not limited to, the College website, printed and digital marketing materials, digital communications, speeches/remarks, and presentations from within Marketing and Communications and other departments
•Maintaining the editorial calendar
•Managing the story pitch/ideas system
•Managing Scripps Magazine production, which includes:
oManage magazine production schedule and deadlines
oInvite and prep magazine feature writers
oCopyedit magazine content
oManage proofreading and corrections process
oManage approvals process
•Understanding and implementing the College’s style and brand requirements;
•Co-supervising the Marketing and Communications student writers under supervision of the Creative Director.
•Assisting with the distribution of communications to the Scripps College community
•Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
•Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential function will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

•Proven ability to write clear, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate for the College’s target audiences
•Ability to critically evaluate information and assess news value.
•Team player: works well as part of the Marketing and Communications team and is willing to take direction, but can be trusted to get things done on their own.
•Ability to write quickly, yet accurately, and to produce content quickly when necessary
•Adept at receiving and giving constructive criticism
•Extreme attention to detail
•Strong project management and organizational skills; ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
•Experience writing news or feature stories in a newsroom
•Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation
•Familiarity with AP and Chicago style
•Thorough research and fact-checking skills
•Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills
•Adaptability: the writer/editor can quickly and seamlessly switch from writing about one topic in a certain style and tone to a different topic and tone without losing concentration
•Hard worker: our staff writers must be tenacious in completing assigned projects.
•Experience in higher education is a plus.
•Experience creating innovative and interactive news and feature content for a digital platform is a plus.

Qualifications & Standards

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Graduate degree preferred.

Any combination of education, training or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

Classification and Status

This is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt position.

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Supervisory Responsibility

Will supervise student employees.

Physical Requirements

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans.

Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.
